The Orb featuring David Gilmour - Metallic Spheres [2010]
FLAC (Lossless) | 313 MB | Cover
Genre: Ambient house, Ambient, Ambient techno, Dub, Chill out
The Orb are an English electronic music group known for spawning the genre of ambient house. Founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and KLF member Jimmy Cauty, The Orb began as ambient and dub DJs in London. Its early performances were inspired by ambient and electronic artists of the 1970s and 1980s, most notably Brian Eno and Kraftwerk. Because of its trippy sound, the Orb developed a cult following among clubbers "coming down" from drug-induced highs. The Orb has maintained its drug-related and science fiction themes despite personnel changes including the departure of Cauty and other Orb members Kris Weston, Andy Falconer, Simon Phillips, and Andy Hughes. Paterson has been the only permanent member, continuing to work as the Orb with the Swiss-German producer Thomas Fehlmann and, later, with Killing Joke's Martin "Youth" Glover and Tim Bran of Dreadzone.
Alex Paterson prides the Orb on manipulating obscure samples beyond recognition on its albums and during its concerts; however, his unauthorised use of other artists' works has led to disputes with musicians, most notably with Rickie Lee Jones and Steve Reich. During its live shows of the 1990s, the Orb performed using digital audio tape machines optimised for live mixing and sampling before switching to laptops and digital media. Despite changes in performance method, the Orb maintained its colourful light shows and psychedelic imagery in concert. These visually intensive performances prompted critics to compare the group to Pink Floyd.
The Orb's critical and commercial success in the United Kingdom peaked in the early 1990s with the albums The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld and U.F.Orb, the latter of which reached #1 on the British album charts in 1992. This success led to its infamous appearance on Top of the Pops, where the group showcased its quirky style by playing chess (an interest of Paterson's since his early youth) while the group's single "Blue Room" ran in the background. The Orb's mid-1990s albums were met with mixed reactions from British critics; however, its work received praise from American publications such as Rolling Stone. The group experimented with vocalists on its next two albums, which critics generally described as bland and uninspired. The Orb then shifted gears to a minimal techno style spearheaded by member Thomas Fehlmann, releasing its new material on the record label Kompakt.
Metallic Spheres is the tenth studio album released by ambient techno group The Orb in October 2010, and features Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour.
We should know by now that when it comes to music, supergroups are rarely a good idea. Its musical maths – the idea x artist + y artist is never the sum of its parts, should be known by now. Such sums generally instead represent a reduction, something less than each artist does by themselves. So it’s with a heavy heart I have to tell you that the combination of The Orb and Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, two artists that across the generations would appear to have a lot to learn and give to each other’s sound are on this recording, eminently forgettable.
In its favour, it’s a low key record – it comes across as simple side project not designed to create ground breaking art or electronic anthems. There are two tracks, quite long, quite soundtracky and fairly abstract. However if you’re hoping still for some updating of Manuel Gottsching or even Pete Namlook, then even with these low expectations it just doesn’t gel.
Ultimately it seems split between two sounds – it lacks a good groove that you’d find with some of Alex Paterson’s later stuff and Dave Gilmour’s guitar, while pleasant, feels phoned in. It could’ve been the icing on the cake – some cosmic guitar jamming gently enhancing the electronic rhythmns – as with the aforementioned Ash Ra Tempel. But instead it feels unnecessary and the electronic undercarriage doesn’t carry the music by itself.
This is the main weak point – the structure’s not there – there’s no peak, no matter how mellow but merely drifts in an inconsequential meandering fashion, that ultimately bored me. It’s a real shame – perhaps if this had happened when The Orb’s Floyd fixation was at its peak in the early 90s perhaps things could’ve been different. But ultimately I think this is a classic case of be careful what you wish for.
Before finishing, I have to confess I’ve never liked a Pink Floyd album post-Wish You Were Here, but even allowing for this, it’s not so much that either artist’s contribution destroys the work, more that it never really forms in the first place. File under for completists only.

The Orb - Orbus Terrarum [1995]
APE (Lossless) | 468 MB | Covers
Genre: Ambient house
Orbus Terrarum is the third studio album of electronic music artist The Orb released on Island Records in 1995.
Before leaving The Orb, member Kris Weston had begun work on Orbus Terrarum. However, when he left The Orb, German producer Thomas Fehlmann joined as a full-time studio member. The Orb, now consisting of Alex Paterson, Andy Hughes, and Fehlmann, finished producing Orbus Terrarum. Unlike previous albums by The Orb, Orbus Terrarum featured more "earthbound" and "organic" sounds instead of the trippy science fiction themed music they had previously written. Orbus Terrarum suffered, as Paterson described it, "a good kicking" at the hands of the British press, who described it as "generic ambient music" and stated that it was a low point for Paterson's creativity. Orbus Terrarum further alienated many of the group's fans as they had with Pomme Fritz,[6] causing the album to only reach #20 on the UK charts, much lower than their previous albums. American critics, however, gave it great acclaim, including Rolling Stone who made it their album of the month, citing the album's symphonic flow coupled with The Orb's "uniquely British wit". A quote from Tony Benn, Labour MP, graces the inner case of the 1995 release and the CD booklet of the 2008 re-issue. It says, "There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured."
In 2008, Orbus Terrarum was remastered and released with a bonus remix disc. The package includes liner notes written by Kris Needs.
